Happy new year all! How does it feel to be back at work? 

We've been looking at ways that people can be happier, healthier and more productive at work. Surprise surprise, it's all about what you have on your desk. Here is our list of the 10 best things to have close to hand in the office:

1. HEADPHONES
Listening to music while you work is known to boost productivity, when you have an important task to complete it can be helpful to plug in to your favourite tunes, shut the rest of the office out and just get on with it!


2. A POTTED PLANT
Plants are scientifically proven to clean the air, boost mood and strengthen immunity. They also look pretty. So put one on your desk. We promise, you'll love it.


3. AN ANALOGUE CLOCK.
On the wall or on your desk, an analogue clock will let you know the time so you don't have to look at your phone and risk being distracted. 


4. FRAMED PHOTO
A framed photo is a great thing to have on your desk. It might conjure up memories of fun times, or could be of a loved one. Either way, it will remind you of who you really are - important when you're getting through those long days in the office.


5. STICKY NOTES
Where would we be without post its? In 2017 make a resolution to stop writing messages and reminders on scrappy bits of paper and the back of envelopes. Invest in a brightly coloured pack of sticky notes - you'll feel better for it, and your colleagues will love you!


6. PHONE CHARGER
There's never one around when you need it right? This year buy yourself a spare phone charger and keep it in your desk drawer. That way there will be no risk of your phone running out of juice and you having to wander around trying to borrow a charger from a colleague.


7. STRESSBALLS / TOYS
They may seem a little old fashioned - but having something to play with at your desk can significantly reduce anxiety during stressful times. Desk toys and stressballs can also boost creativity and energy levels.


8. HEALTHY SNACKS
Keeping a few healthy snacks in your drawer can stave off hunger pangs when they inevitably arise. Having snacks like nuts, dried fruit and dark chocolate to hand will stop you nipping off to the shop for a sugary treat and will boost your mood and energy levels.


9. A WATER BOTTLE
Keeping hydrated in the office is essential if you want to boost productivity and sail through the 4pm lull. Don't spend loads of money on bottles of mineral water though, buy a water bottle, fill it with water from the tap, drink the water, repeat!


10. YOUR OWN MUG
It's not rocket science, using your own mug at work can significantly reduce your chances of catching the office lurgie. Cold and flu germs can last on surfaces for 24 hours. Using your own personal mug can help you stay healthy and make you feel more comfortable.
